Macroscopic superstrings as interpolating solitons

It is known that, in string sigma-model metric, the 'extreme' fivebrane solution of D=10 supergravity interpolates between D=10 Minkowski spacetime and a supersym-metric S 3 compactification to a linear dilaton vacuum. We show here that, in fivebrane sigma-model metric, the extreme string solution of D=10 supergravity interpolates between Minkowski spacetime and a hitherto unknown supersymmetri...

Supergravity solitons and non-perturbative superstrings

Heterotic and type II superstrings have, when toroidally-compactified to D=4, N=4 and N=8 supersymmetry, respectively. The (generic) effective N=4 or N=8 supergravity theory has, in both cases, 28 U(1) gauge fields and hence particles in the spectrum may carry any of 56 electric or magnetic charges; we may therefore associate to each particle in the spectrum a charge 56-vector Z. In perturbatio...

Fundamental Superstrings as Holograms

The worldsheet of a macroscopic fundamental superstring in the Green-Schwarz light-cone gauge is viewed as a possible boundary hologram of the near horizon region of a small black string. For toroidally compactified strings, the hologram has global symmetries of AdS3 ×Sd−1 ×T8−d (d = 3, . . . , 8), only some of which extend to local conformal symmetries. We construct the bulk string theory in d...

Quadratic solitons as nonlocal solitons.

We show that quadratic solitons are equivalent to solitons of a nonlocal Kerr medium. This provides new physical insight into the properties of quadratic solitons, often believed to be equivalent to solitons of an effective saturable Kerr medium. The nonlocal analogy also allows for analytical solutions and the prediction of bound states of quadratic solitons.

Interpolating statistics realized as Deformed Harmonic Oscillators

The idea that a system obeying interpolating statistics can be described by a deformed oscillator algebra has been an outstanding issue. This original concept introduced long ago by Greenberg is the motivation for this investigation. We establish that a q-deformed algebra can be used to describe the statistics of particles (anyons) interpolating continuously between Bose and Fermi statistics, i...
